Our Programs

Uplifting Community Voices

Since our inception, we have remained steadfast in our goal of bringing high-quality creative writing instruction to the masses.

We're passionate about centering stories of emerging writers and anyone who is in danger of being erased.

In addition to offering expert-led classes and workshops, we partner with historically marginalized groups to elevate their voices and provide a platform to showcase their talents. We also give youth opportunities to express their creativity through our K-12 programs.

City Stories

The City Stories program seeks to preserve diverse, interwoven and intersectional stories of San Fransico that are at risk of being erased due to gentrification. It offers free workshops and writing events to capture the experiences of the City's residents, chronicling a rich curation of local narratives.

Write from the Gut!

Write from the Gut, our longest-running reading series, platforms emerging artists in the Bay Area to share their works-in-progress and published pieces in a 3-min performance. Artists are asked to share whatever is on their mind, from the deepest parts of who they are, and not be afraid to express vulnerability.

Dispatches from Quarantine

Dispatches from Quarantine began at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic as a literary blog and then transformed into a collection of public readings, discussions, and workshops through 2023 with the help of the California Arts Council.

Professional writers from diverse backgrounds shared stories on how the pandemic impacted their lives, careers, social movements, and changed the field of creative writing. All the readings and discussions were held in-person or live-streamed and then published on the SFCWI's YouTube channel.
