Chapbooks are an art and a craft. The format is increasingly popular in the indie lit world and a calling card for many respected poets. In this course we will learn the art of arranging well-written and cohesive short manuscripts for publication in chapbook form. Even if you feel you haven’t generated enough material to currently put a chap collection together, we’ve got you covered.
By the end of this course you will be able to identify your strongest pieces of writing, employ editorial strategies to make them pop, and explore the rhythm and cohesiveness of poetic arrangement in a short manuscript for publication.
The workshop will also go over the various options for publication, distribution and the basic do’s and don’ts of chapbook submissions. By the time the workshop is concluded, you will be in possession of a chapbook-length manuscript of poetry or prose ready to shop around to small presses. We will also cover strategies for achieving publication.
About the Instructor:
Workshop facilitator Paul Corman-Roberts has coached many successful poets to publication, from chapbooks to singular poems to full-length collections. He is the author of four chaps and one full-length collection of prose poetry, as well as winning the 2010 Out of Our Poetry Contest and earning nominations for Pushcart, Best of the Web and the Northern California Book Awards. He is an MA/MFA Graduate of the New College of California Poetics program where he studied under writers such as Genny Lim, Neeli Cherkovski, David Meltzer, Tom Clark and Gabrielle Glancy. He organizes literary events Bay-Area wide.
